The prestigious All-England Club opened its doors for the 138th Wimbledon on June 30, 2025, and, as always, world-class tennis continues to be played. Among the early singles matches, Iga Swiatek vs. Caty McNally and Maria Sakkari vs. Elena Rybakina are perhaps the most anticipated. Both have an elite player versus an interesting lower-tier player narrative.

Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion and world number one, joined Wimbledon 2025 following a successful grass-court season that included a final appearance at the Bad Homburg Open. Doubles specialist McNally of the United States returned to major tennis after time away from the tour, entering the tournament on a protected ranking and recording a dominating win in her opening round. 

This meeting is their first on the WTA Tour, adding another level of intrigue to the second-round clash. 

• Iga Swiatek started her journey at Wimbledon with a strong 7-5, 6-1 victory, showing off her solid serving and great ability to convert break points.

• Caty McNally: Posted a quality 6-3, 6-1 win in her opening match but faces a tall order against the world No. 1 after some time away from the tour.

• McNally: 12.00

Given Swiatek's consistency, superior baseline control, and momentum, she is the huge favorite. McNally may be able to contest early games, but Swiatek's shot tolerance and movement should overwhelm the American.

• Prediction of the Match: Swiatek to win in straight sets (2–0).

Maria Sakkari, a former top 10 player, possesses athleticism and experience going into this encounter but has been plagued by inconsistency in 2025. Her opponent, Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, is one of the most lethal grass-court players on tour and a legitimate title contender this year. 

Rybakina leads the head-to-head 2–0, including a dominant win on grass, and her powerful serve and clean baseline tennis have historically troubled Sakkari.

Maria Sakkari's 2025 season has been turbulent, with some early exits from major tournaments. Nonetheless, she is physically fit and psychologically powerful.

Elena Rybakina, on the other hand, is in top form, riding a wave of confidence thanks to her aggressive first-strike game and excellent serving.

• Sakkari: 5.60

Rybakina is a grass-court natural, and her 2022 championship underscored her affection for the surface. Her flat groundstrokes, strong serve, and finishing abilities at the net make her a nightmare for any opponent, especially those less at home on grass.

Although Sakkari has the athleticism to extend rallies and battle on defense, Rybakina's power and comfort on grass give her the edge.

• Prediction: Rybakina to win, likely in straight sets (2–0), but a three-set battle is not out of the question if Sakkari improves her return game.

• Swiatek vs. McNally: Swiatek's rhythm and control should take her through comfortably.

• Sakkari vs. Rybakina: Rybakina's game is suited to grass, and she should be able to get through.

Both contests strongly favor the seeded players, but Wimbledon has always been a venue where surprises can happen. At least for the moment, game form and court surface conditions give a clear edge to Swiatek and Rybakina progressing further in the tournament.
