Jakarta, June 3rd, 2025 — The opening day of the prestigious Indonesia Open 2025, a BWF Super 1000 tournament, featured a mix of resilience, redemption, and shock exits, with India's P.V. Sindhu marked a hard-fought victory, while Lakshya Sen bowed out in a tight three-game thriller.
Sindhu Beats Okuhara in Epic Clash
Two-time Olympic medal list P.V. Sindhu overcame former world champion and long-time rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in a grueling 79-minute first-round encounter. Sindhu’s performance was a much-needed confidence boost after a string of early-round exits, with the win signaling a potential return to form.
This was the 20th meeting between the two, with Sindhu now extending her head-to-head lead to 11-9. Their rivalry, rekindled on the Istora Gelora Bung Karno courts, once again proved to be a battle of attrition and endurance.
Sen Falls to Shi Yuqi in Marathon Match
India’s top-ranked male shuttler Lakshya Sen was unable to overcome world No. 1 Shi Yuqi in a tightly contested match. Sen displayed tremendous grit, recovering from a 9-2 deficit to take the second game, but ultimately fell short in the decider as Shi went on a decisive 6-0 run to close the match 21-11, 20-22, 21-15 in 65 minutes.
An Se Young Back to Winning Ways
After suffering her first loss of the season in Singapore, reigning Olympic champion and world No. 1 A Se Young bounced back emphatically, defeating Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-14, 21-11. A now boasts an 8-0 career record against Busanan and comfortably secured her place in the round of 16 in just 41 minutes.
