Shanghai E-Prix 2025: Full Preview and Schedule

Formula E returns to one of the world’s most iconic motorsport venues as the 2025 Hankook Shanghai E-Prix gears up for a thrilling double-header on May 31 and June 1. Taking place at the legendary Shanghai International Circuit, this event marks Rounds 10 and 11 of Season 11 in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

After its successful debut last year, the Shanghai venue is ready to electrify fans once more, and this time with a shortened 3.051 km configuration specially designed for Formula E’s unique wheel-to-wheel action. With overtaking opportunities, tight corners, energy management drama, and PIT BOOST strategy all in play, fans are in for an exciting weekend of racing.

A Return to the Roots: Formula E Back in China

Formula E made its debut back in 2014 with a historic first race in Beijing, launching the world's first all-electric racing series. Since then, China has hosted E-Prix events in Hong Kong, Sanya, and now Shanghai which is a symbolically important destination for the series.

Following its Season 10 debut, the Shanghai International Circuit returns to the calendar with renewed energy. The Shanghai E-Prix celebrates not just high-performance electric racing but also the championship’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and global reach.

Shanghai International Circuit: A Formula E Challenge

  • Circuit Length: 3.051 km

  • Direction: Clockwise

  • Turns: 12

  • Attack Mode: Turn 2 (outside long right-hander)

  • Course Type: Permanent Racing Circuit

Conceived by renowned track architect Hermann Tilke, the Shanghai International Circuit is visually inspired by the Chinese character "上" (shang), meaning “up” or “superio”r. Known for hosting Formula 1’s Chinese Grand Prix since 2004, the circuit’s modified layout offers a thrilling test for the electric racers.

This shortened 3.051 km configuration keeps the essence of the track’s character, combining high-speed straights, technical corners, and plenty of room for overtaking—a perfect recipe for Formula E action. The iconic Turns 1 and 2 loop, a tightening right-hander complex, is a highlight and home to this round’s Attack Mode activation zone.

What’s New? PIT BOOST Returns

Making its debut earlier in Season 11, PIT BOOST will feature in one of the two Shanghai races.

What is PIT BOOST?

PIT BOOST is a mandatory mid-race energy strategy where each driver gets a 10% energy increase (3.85 kWh) by entering the pit lane for a 30-second, 600 kW boost.

  • Each team has only one rig, meaning no double-stacking.

  • Drivers must decide the optimal moment to pit without losing too much track position.

  • PIT BOOST was previously used in Jeddah, Monaco, and Tokyo and has added layers of tactical drama.

Expect game-changing strategy calls and surprise lead changes.

Drivers’ Championship Standings (Top 5)

Position Driver Team Points
1 Oliver Rowland Nissan 161
2 Pascal Wehrlein TAG Heuer Porsche 84
3 Antonio Felix da Costa TAG Heuer Porsche 73
4 Jake Dennis Andretti TBD
5 Mitch Evans Jaguar TCS Racing TBD

Rowland on a Rampage

With four wins, three second places, and three poles (Monaco, Tokyo, and the previous round), Oliver Rowland has been a revelation for Nissan. His dominance is rarely seen in such a tightly matched series, but Shanghai’s unpredictable nature means nothing is certain.

Every Team on the Podium: Formula E’s Hyper-Competitive Era

After Dan Ticktum’s breakout podium in Tokyo, every team on the grid has now secured a top-3 finish in Season 11 — a first for the sport.

Highlights so far:

  • Taylor Barnard (NEOM McLaren): 4 podiums in rookie season

  • Maximilian Guenther (DS PENSKE): Victory in Jeddah

  • Stoffel Vandoorne (Maserati MSG): Surprise win in Tokyo

  • Jake Hughes (McLaren): P3 in Jeddah

  • Nick Cassidy (Jaguar): P1 in Monte Carlo

  • Lucas di Grassi (Lola Yamaha ABT): P2 in Miami

  • Sebastien Buemi (Envision): P1 from P8 in Monaco

This level of parity under the GEN3 Evo formula keeps fans guessing every single race weekend.

Shanghai’s vibrant atmosphere and world-class infrastructure make it a standout venue for hosting electric racing. The Bund’s skyline, Huangpu River, and citywide buzz offer a perfect backdrop for global motorsport.

Last Year in Shanghai

In 2024, the Shanghai E-Prix returned to the calendar and made an immediate impact. The crowd energy, overtakes, and Attack Mode strategy set a high bar. Antonio Felix da Costa emerged victorious, and he’ll be hoping to repeat his success this weekend.

Can Anyone Catch Rowland?

As Formula E heads into Rounds 10 and 11 of a 16-round championship, all eyes are on whether anyone can close the gap to Oliver Rowland. With energy strategy, PIT BOOST, Shanghai’s technical challenges, and a grid full of winners, the only certainty is unpredictability.

Whether you’re watching from the grandstands in Shanghai or streaming from around the world, don’t miss a second of the action.
